The DRA Rising Star Competition raises over $15,000!

Over $15k was raised for Dancers Responding to AIDS (DRA) at The DRA Rising Star Competition on May 16, 2009 at Walt Whitman High School in Huntington Station, NY. Fire Island Dance Festival (FIDF) committee member, Barbara M. Weltsek, ESQ. approached DRA with the new fundraising initiative. The competition had over 160 dances compete in front of an exclusive panel of judges. All participation fees went to DRA.

Congratulations to Kamilah Shah, this year’s DRA RISING STAR of Westchester Dance Academy who was selected as the recipient of the highest honor of the day and awarded an exclusive performance spot alongside world-famous dance companies on the distinguished stage of the Fire Island Dance Festival Fifteen. FIDF has won recognition in the New York Times and this year will host distinguished dancers from Keigwin + Company, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Rolando Sarabia & Mary Carmen Catoya /Principal dancers, Miami City Ballet, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet with premiere dances by Armitage Gone! Dance, Danny Tidwell, Jodi Melnick, Angel Feliciano, Zvi Dance and a piece d’occasion by choreographer Christopher Huggins all performing against the stunning backdrop of The Great South Bay on July 18 and 19.
